In India, where diarrheal diseases continue to claim thousands of young lives each year, a student innovator has turned compassion and creativity into a life-saving idea. Daksh Pruthi, a student of Modern School, Vasant Vihar, has developed ByeByeLota, a low-cost, patent-pending portable bidet that transforms single-use plastic bottles into hygienic faucets. This ByeByeLota sanitation innovation tackles one of the root causes of sanitation-related diseases while also addressing the challenge of plastic waste.

Priced at under ten rupees, ByeByeLota is sustainable, affordable, and practical. It replaces the traditional lota with a portable, hygienic faucet designed to prevent direct hand contact with fecal matter. “The idea was simple—how can hygiene be made safe, affordable, and accessible for everyone, even in places where sanitation is broken?” Daksh explains.

His journey began with that single question, which soon evolved into a mission. “I realized that the lack of proper sanitation isn’t just a health issue—it’s about dignity and equality. ByeByeLota is my attempt to bring that dignity back,” he adds.

Through his non-profit, the Daksh Wash Well Foundation, Daksh has already distributed over 5,000 ByeByeLota units, improving hygiene for more than 35,000 people across Delhi NCR. The foundation has also conducted awareness drives and workshops in urban slums, NGOs, and community centers, educating more than 15,000 individuals about proper sanitation and hygiene practices.

The ByeByeLota sanitation innovation has also drawn attention for its dual impact—improving public health while promoting environmental sustainability. “By giving a second life to single-use plastic bottles, we’re not only promoting better hygiene but also reducing plastic pollution,” Daksh says.

With an academic score of 98.8% in the CBSE Grade 10 board exams and global recognition in STEM Olympiads, Daksh has also collaborated with IIT Delhi on developing AI and ML-enabled waste segregation bins. His approach to innovation combines empathy and technology, shaped by his early volunteer work as a scribe for differently abled students. “That experience taught me empathy and the importance of using knowledge for good,” he reflects.

Looking ahead, Daksh envisions ByeByeLota becoming a common household essential—an affordable hygiene product as integral as sanitary pads. He is in talks with multinational corporations to direct CSR funding toward scaling up production and has begun exploring partnerships under the Swachh Bharat Mission. His model ensures financial sustainability by using profits from urban sales to subsidize rural distribution.

Technology, empathy, and education can drive meaningful change. ByeByeLota is not just about sanitation—it’s about dignity, health, and a cleaner future for India,” Daksh asserts confidently.

For this young innovator, ByeByeLota is not merely an invention—it’s a movement that redefines hygiene, empowers communities, and inspires a cleaner, more equitable India.
