In this special interaction, Richa Agarwal, Founder and Beauty Expert at the Cleopatra Spa & Salon Chain, shares her perspective on empowering women through skill development. She also serves as a GC Member with the Beauty & Wellness Sector Skill Council under the National Skill Development Corporation, is the Chief Mentor for Beauty Therapy at World Skills India, and heads the Standard Sub Committee at the Beauty & Wellness Sector Skill Council. Q1. Despite progress in many sectors, women still encounter several challenges at the workplace. In your view, what are the most common issues women continue to face?

Richa Agarwal:
Women have undoubtedly made significant progress in professional spaces, yet many challenges still remain. One of the most common issues is the constant struggle to balance professional commitments with family responsibilities. In many households, women are still expected to manage the majority of domestic duties alongside their careers.

Another challenge is the lack of equal recognition and representation in leadership roles. Even when women are highly capable, they sometimes have to work harder to prove their abilities. Social conditioning can also affect confidence levels, making some women hesitate before taking up leadership positions or negotiating for better opportunities.

However, the positive aspect is that awareness around these issues is increasing, and organisations today are gradually moving towards creating more inclusive work environments.

Q2. What steps can women take to overcome these workplace challenges and grow professionally?

Richa Agarwal:
The first step is developing strong self-belief. Women must recognise their strengths and trust their capabilities. Confidence grows when individuals continuously upgrade their knowledge and skills.

Seeking mentorship and building supportive professional networks is also extremely helpful. When women connect with mentors and peers, they gain guidance, motivation, and valuable industry insights.

Women should also not hesitate to express their aspirations and take initiative when opportunities arise. Speaking up for oneself, staying persistent, and focusing on personal growth can help overcome many professional barriers.

Q3. Skill development is often considered a powerful tool for empowerment. How does skilling contribute to women’s economic independence?

Richa Agarwal:
Skill development is one of the most effective ways to empower women. When a woman acquires a professional skill, she gains the ability to earn independently and support herself and her family. Financial independence strengthens confidence and helps women make important life decisions with greater assurance.

The beauty and wellness sector is particularly impactful in this regard because it offers practical skills that can quickly translate into employment or entrepreneurship. Women can begin their journey with training and gradually build their own businesses or professional careers.

Skilling also opens doors for women in smaller towns and semi-urban areas, enabling them to create livelihoods without relocating to major metropolitan cities.

Q4. The beauty and wellness industry in India has expanded rapidly. What kind of career opportunities does this sector offer today?

Richa Agarwal:
The beauty and wellness industry has evolved tremendously over the past decade. Today, it offers a wide range of professional opportunities for individuals who are passionate about grooming, aesthetics, and wellness.

Careers can be built in fields such as cosmetology, professional makeup artistry, skincare and aesthetic treatments, hair styling, spa and wellness therapies, nail technology, and salon management. With increasing awareness about personal grooming and holistic wellness, the demand for trained professionals continues to grow across salons, spas, luxury hospitality spaces, and wellness centres.

The industry also encourages entrepreneurship, allowing skilled professionals to eventually start their own salons or wellness ventures.

Q5. As someone closely associated with the Beauty and Wellness Sector Skill Council, how do you see the role of skill councils in strengthening the industry?

Richa Agarwal:
Skill councils play an important role in building a structured ecosystem for professional training. They help set industry standards and ensure that training programmes remain aligned with current industry requirements.

Through certifications and specialised training modules, skill councils help aspiring professionals acquire credible qualifications. This ensures that trainees are prepared for real-world industry demands and can confidently pursue careers in the beauty and wellness sector.

For women especially, these structured programmes create opportunities to develop expertise and build sustainable livelihoods.

Q6. As the founder of Cleopatra Spa & Salon Chain, you have mentored many professionals. Have you seen transformations through skill training?

Richa Agarwal:
Yes, I have witnessed many inspiring transformations over the years. Several women who began their journey with limited resources or experience gradually developed into confident professionals through skill training.

Skill education not only provides employment opportunities but also builds self-confidence and independence. When women realise that their talent can help them create a stable livelihood, it completely changes their perspective on life and career.

Many of these women eventually become trainers, mentors, or entrepreneurs themselves, which creates a strong cycle of empowerment within communities.

Q7. What advice would you give to young women who aspire to build a career in the beauty and wellness industry?

Richa Agarwal:
My advice to young women would be to approach this industry with dedication and passion. The beauty and wellness sector values creativity, discipline, and continuous learning.

It is important to begin with professional training and focus on mastering the fundamentals. Staying updated with evolving trends, advanced techniques, and global standards can help professionals stay relevant and competitive.

Most importantly, women should believe in their potential and not limit their ambitions. With the right mindset and skills, they can build successful careers and even become entrepreneurs.

Q8. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, what message would you like to share with women across the country?

Richa Agarwal:
Women’s empowerment begins with education, skill development, and self-belief. When women are given the opportunity to learn and grow, they are capable of achieving extraordinary success.

Financial independence and professional skills give women the confidence to shape their own future. When a woman becomes empowered, she not only transforms her own life but also positively influences her family and community.

My message to women is to continue learning, believe in their abilities, and never hesitate to pursue their dreams.
