What are Indian companies doing to aid in the COVID-19 crisis?

Leading firms in India from various sectors are aiding the citizens and the government to combat the COVID-19 pandemic by venturing into uncharted territories. Be it designing and building ventilators or making masks, personal protective equipment (PPE), and sanitizers, Many Indian companies, and brands are going beyond their specialization and stepping forward as medical saviors in these challenging times. Making India self-dependent, giving back to society, and aiding in preparedness remains the sole agenda for these companies.

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) is producing facemasks and PPE on a large scale for health workers among several other initiatives. Dabur India Ltd has launched its hand sanitizer, Dabur Sanitize. Rajeev John, Marketing Head-Home & Personal Care of Dabur said in a PTI report, “In today’s world, where consumers are facing increasing health hazards due to the emergence of new viruses and pandemics, there is a growing need for getting instant and on-the-go protection.” Other companies, which are following suit, include Patanjali Ayurved, Emami, VLCC Personal Care, Asian Paints, and Raymond Consumer Care by manufacturing hand sanitizers’. “Asian Paints has entered into this category to support the government in its various measures towards COVID-19 relief and address the huge need of a hand and surface sanitization in these testing times,” as per a statement from Asian Paints shared on their website. Nivea India is donating hand sanitizers to public hospitals and healthcare institutions in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and its distribution partners in the country. Pharmaceutical companies such as Cipla, Zydus Wellness, Zeelab, and IPC Healthcare have commenced sanitizer production. CavinKare has launched gadgets and surface disinfectant spray Bacto-V.

As per All India Distillers’ Association (AIDA), around 150 distilleries are also manufacturing hand sanitizers’ in India to fight the novel coronavirus. Radico Khaitan and Amrut Distilleries among others have joined the sanitizer bandwagon. Diageo India and Bacardi India will produce and donate hand sanitizers to healthcare workers and government hospitals respectively. 

Facemasks have got designer touch now and to meet the growing demands, the fraternity of fashion designers has chipped in. Ensuring safety standards, they are producing facemasks at their production facilities. They are using different fabrics and designs to make these masks. According to our reports, noted designers like Masaba Gupta, Nitya Bajaj, Anita Dongre, Payal Singhal, and Pallavi Mohan are making these masks in huge numbers.

Mahindra and Mahindra is making low-cost ventilators for COVID-19 patients called AIR100 to assist in fending off the pandemic. “This device (Ambo bag) is an interim lifesaver and its estimated cost will be below INR 7,500,” said Anand Mahindra, the Chairman of the group in his tweet. The company is also producing hand sanitizers and face shields with Ford Motor’s aid. Hyundai India has tied up with Air Liquid to supply ventilators besides providing PPE material. Bharat Electronics Limited will manufacture ventilators by collaborating with ‘Skanray’. Maruti Suzuki is making ventilators, facemasks, and PPE kits in partnership with AgVa Healthcare. TVS Motor Company has donated facemasks and PPEs.

These socially responsible brands are going the extra mile to show their solidarity towards fighting Coronavirus. This pandemic has allowed us to pause and reconsider life’s value and notice what truly matters.
