Amazon India has released a Prime Video mobile-only plan to compete with Netflix’s Rs. 199 mobile-only plan, in what marks a global first for the first ecommerce firm, called Prime Video Mobile Edition. Amazon’s Prime Video Mobile Version, unlike Netflix, is tied directly to your prepaid plan.
With the Prime Video content available bundled with Airtel recharge packs starting at Rs. 89, Amazon is partnering with Airtel to kick off Prime Video Mobile Version. For a 30-day free trial of Prime Video Mobile Version, all Airtel prepaid customers will be eligible. Starting at 2 pm on Wednesday 13 January (that’s today), you can sign up for Prime Video Smartphone Edition.
Much like the “Mobile” plan from Netflix, Prime Video Mobile Version will deliver video quality in standard definition (SD) on a single screen. But you can opt to upgrade to the complete Prime Video experience, which includes multiple profiles, simultaneous streaming, TV access, and HD/ 4K content, unlike Netflix.
If you subscribe directly or as part of the Rs. 349 prepaid plan that lasts for 28 days but also includes unlimited roaming and 2 GB of data per day, you can get 30 days of Amazon Prime by recharging your Airtel prepaid number with Rs. 131-Amazon Prime costs Rs. 129 per month. This isn’t entirely fresh, as since 2018, Airtel has been offering Amazon Prime on prepaid plans.
But if you’re happy to just watch Prime Video on your computer, here are the prepaid Airtel plans that give you access to the Mobile Version of Prime Video. They are all available on the Airtel Thanks app, or can be bought at over a million Airtel stores across India.

“In a mailed statement, Amazon Prime Video’s worldwide VP Jay Marine said: “India, with very high interaction rates, is one of our fastest growing territories in the world. Buoyed by this response, we want to double-down by providing an even larger base of Indian customers with our much-loved entertainment content. The mobile phone has become one of the most widely used streaming devices, given the high mobile broadband penetration in the country. We look forward to entertaining all Indians with our unique and original content with the launch of Prime Video Mobile Version.
Indian director and country general manager Gaurav Gandhi of Amazon Prime Video added: “Over the last 4 years, Prime Video has become the most popular premium streaming service in the country with viewers from over 4,300 cities and towns.” We believe the Mobile Edition plan will further speed up the adoption of Prime Video in India and allow our popular entertainment content to be consumed by an even larger number of clients.
This Amazon program is not only intended to give consumers more variety (of plans), but also quick access to Prime Video subscription along with mobile data plans. As our first partner in India for Prime Video Mobile Edition, we are pleased to collaborate with Airtel.
The chief marketing officer of Bharti Airtel, Shashwat Sharma, added: “At Airtel, through our Airtel Thanks program, we are deeply passionate about providing our customers with a distinct experience.” By leveraging Airtel’s core strengths of premium customers, deep distribution and best-in-class video network, we are pleased to partner with Amazon to democratize quality digital entertainment in India.
For a wide base of Indian consumers, smartphones powered by pre-paid connections and inexpensive data are commonplace. Mobile Edition can make Prime Video synonymous with quality entertainment for this large consumer community. We look forward to extending our service’s reach to India’s entire pre-paid customer base.
