A recent report has confirmed that Apple has finally introduced a new Echo smart speaker in the Echo family and the product that the online retailer has launched lately is exclusive to the Indian market.
The new Echo Input Portable Smart Speaker Edition from Amazon is basically a compact speaker with 360-degree sound and, it will be equipped with a built-in rechargeable battery that no other device in the Echo line-up was equipped with until now.
Amazon, in one of the statements recently confirmed that the device would be equipped with a battery of 4,800mAh capacity, and it would provide 10 hours of music playback and 11 hours of standby battery life.
The product name is a bit curious, and it seems that the new device doesn’t appear to share the Echo Input’s key feature of adding Alexa to an existing speaker setup. Rather, Amazon uses the Portable Smart Speaker Version of Echo Input as another way to get Alexa into the home.
“Portability has been one of the most requested features in India,” Amazon’s Alexa devices VP Miriam Daniel said in comments reported by TechCrunch. “You want to be able to carry Alexa with you from room to room within your homes. So we have designed something just for you.”
Amazon currently does not sell Echo speakers with battery in the West. In 2016, although Amazon Tap was released, and as its reception was not good, so the company cancelled the product in 2016. But in this new product, the need to push a button to trigger Alexa, which was one of its biggest failings has been fixed.
In any case, if the idea of a portable, wireless Echo sounds attractive to you at least for now, then you must be in India. For an introductory cost of 4,999 rupees (~$70), if ordered today, you can receive an Echo Input portable Smart Speaker Edition on December 18th.
